In the previous article, we discussed determining coupling transmission efficiency based on temperature rise, current difference, and slip rate. In this article, we’ll continue by examining two other core capabilities that directly affect equipment safety: Soft-start effect and Overload protection capability Whether these two performance metrics are good or not can basically be determined by installing them on a device, running it through several start-stop cycles, and encountering a single blockage.
1. Check whether the motor starting current rises smoothly and whether there are any spikes.
The most direct evidence of whether a soft starter meets specifications is the inrush current curve. A qualified hydraulic coupling should exhibit a smooth rise in current during motor start-up, without any transient surge currents. Because the fluid gradually engages in power transmission, the motor accelerates nearly under no-load conditions, effectively smoothing out peak current values. Conversely, if the ammeter surges at startup—approaching or even exceeding several times the rated value—it indicates that the soft-start function is essentially ineffective, and grid disturbances and winding losses in the motor persist. On-site observation of the startup process using a clamp meter or data logger will reveal this immediately.
II. Check whether the impact of equipment start-up and shutdown is effectively cushioned.
The value of a hydraulic coupling lies largely in its ability to “protect downstream equipment from shock loads.” A high-performance coupling can effectively cushion the impact of equipment start-up and shutdown, significantly reducing the failure rate of belts, gearboxes, and chains due to breakage. The evaluation method is straightforward: compare the replacement frequency of vulnerable components before and after the modification. If, after installing the coupling, belts no longer tear frequently, gear chipping in the reducer decreases, and incidents of chain pin breakage drop significantly, it indicates that the flexible drive is indeed effective. Conversely, if impacts are still transmitted directly to the end of the drive chain, it suggests that the coupling’s selection or internal design is mismatched.
3. Check whether pressure can be quickly relieved and power cut off when the motor stalls or is blocked.
Overload protection is the coupling’s “life-saving function.” When the downstream equipment seizes or stalls, a qualified coupling should rapidly relieve pressure and discharge oil, cutting off power transmission to reliably protect the motor and the main machine. The normal behavior is: only the fusible plug fails, while the motor remains undamaged, the gearbox is unharmed, and the main unit’s structure sustains no damage; operation can be resumed after replacing the fusible plug. If, during a jam, the motor continues to be forcibly stalled—resulting in overload or even burnout—this indicates that the protective circuit has failed, meaning the coupling did not perform its intended function when it mattered most.
IV. Assess whether heavy-load starting causes the motor to stall
This is a reverse judgment. If the equipment is difficult to restart after a reload, or if the motor is even stalled outright, it indicates that the internal flow passage design of the coupling is flawed and its torque-limiting performance fails to meet specifications. A high-quality fluid coupling can smoothly start under load by utilizing the motor’s peak torque, and even under heavy-load conditions it can gently accelerate the equipment. In contrast, products with poorly designed flow passages and inaccurate torque-limiting characteristics fail to establish proper oil circulation, resulting in insufficient torque transmission during startup—manifesting as an inability to drive the load and causing the unit to stall. When this occurs, don’t immediately suspect the motor; first verify the coupling’s torque-limiting performance.
Summary
To assess soft-start and overload protection capabilities, remember these four field signals: Is the inrush current smooth and free of spikes; has the failure rate of wear parts decreased significantly; when jammed, does only the fusible plug fail; and does heavy-load starting cause the motor to stall? Passing these four criteria demonstrates that the coupling’s soft-start and torque-limiting protection are truly effective. When selecting a product, we recommend requesting the manufacturer to provide startup current curves and overload protection test data; relying on actual measurements is far more reliable than trusting the specifications listed in catalogs.
